Changing your body shape can be challenging. You eat right, exercise and care for your body, but sometimes it feels like your body is rebelling. One example of this is axillary breast tissue, which can lower your self-confidence and cause painful irritation.
What is Axillary Breast Tissue?
Axillary breast tissue appears as pockets of fat along your underarm area. In fact, this tissue isn’t fat at all, but glandular breast tissue. This tissue tends to be dense and fibrous and is rarely affected by diet and exercise. It is often hereditary and affects between 2% to 6% of women.
Problems with Axillary Breast Tissue
Axillary breast tissue can cause both cosmetic and medical concerns. It can make the area appear lumpy, especially when your arms are by your sides. It can cause undergarments and other items of clothing to chafe your skin, making this area sensitive and uncomfortable.
Since it is breast tissue, it is prone to hormonal changes present in menstruation and pregnancy. This area can experience swelling and tenderness, making clothing seem almost unbearable. It can also affect your self-confidence, and you may avoid wearing clothing that draws attention to this area, such as sleeveless dresses or shirts.
Axillary Breast Tissue Removal
There are two procedures that focus on axillary breast tissue removal. If a small amount of tissue needs to be removed, liposuction may be a good choice. Liposuction is performed under local anesthesia and involves placing a small incision in an inconspicuous area, usually along a natural fold in the skin, and using suction to remove fat and tissue.
If a larger amount of tissue needs to be removed, excision will be recommended. In this procedure, small incisions are made to excise the tissue, again with careful consideration in the incision areas to minimize scarring. Excision is performed under general anesthesia. Both procedures can be performed in around an hour.
