Sculptra® Injections
Sculptra is one of the most distinctive injectable treatments in modern facial rejuvenation — a poly-L-lactic acid biostimulator that does not work like a traditional filler. Where hyaluronic acid fillers add volume immediately, Sculptra works gradually: the injection itself produces only modest visible change, but over the following months, the poly-L-lactic acid microparticles stimulate the body to produce its own new collagen. The result is volume restoration that emerges progressively across multiple sessions, looks natural because it is the patient’s own collagen, and lasts up to 2 years — substantially longer than most hyaluronic acid fillers. Sculptra is particularly valued for restoring the diffuse volume loss that occurs with aging across larger areas of the face — cheeks, temples, and the broader midface — and for patients who want gradual rejuvenation that close friends and colleagues do not immediately notice as a change. Dr. John Anastasatos at Los Angeles Plastic Surgery offers Sculptra injections at his Beverly Hills office.
Dr. Anastasatos brings exceptional credentials to Sculptra biostimulator treatment. He has delivered formal academic lectures at the UAB Kirklin Clinic on “Botox and Chemical Peels” — direct teaching credentials in injectable cosmetic treatment. He has published peer-reviewed academic work on Cell-Assisted Lipotransfer (CAL) — directly relevant to the science of collagen-driven volume restoration that underlies how Sculptra produces its results. With over two decades of facial cosmetic expertise in Beverly Hills since 2007, he is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and named by The Luxe Insider as one of the Top 10 Plastic Surgeons in the World.
How Sculptra Works
Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid — a biocompatible, biodegradable substance long used in absorbable surgical sutures. When injected, the poly-L-lactic acid microparticles trigger the body to produce new collagen at the injection site. Over weeks and months, that new collagen progressively builds volume in the treated area.
The treatment timeline is fundamentally different from hyaluronic acid fillers:
- Initial treatment: Modest temporary volume from the injection vehicle (mostly water-based) that resolves within days
- Weeks 4 to 8: Early collagen production begins; subtle improvement emerges
- Months 3 to 6: Significant new collagen has formed; meaningful volume restoration is visible
- Months 6 to 24: Final result is fully expressed; maintenance interval begins
Most patients receive a series of 2 to 4 Sculptra sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to achieve their target result. Once the target is reached, results typically last up to 2 years.
Areas of the Face Sculptra Treats Best
Sculptra is most effective in areas with diffuse volume loss requiring broad, natural-looking restoration:
- Cheek Volumization: Restoring the volume that gives the cheeks fullness and the midface its youthful proportion
- Temple Volume Restoration: The temples are one of the first areas to lose volume with aging — Sculptra is particularly effective here
- Deep Facial Folds: Nasolabial folds and marionette lines, particularly when they are produced by surrounding volume loss rather than the fold itself
- Jawline Definition: Adding subtle structural support to the jawline contour
- Chin Augmentation: Gradual chin projection improvement
- Pre-Jowl Sulcus: The depression in front of the jowl that softens jawline definition
Sculptra is generally not appropriate for the lips, the tear trough, or other delicate or highly mobile areas — hyaluronic acid fillers are preferred for those indications.
What to Expect From a Sculptra Treatment
- Multi-session protocol — Typically 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart
- In-office treatment — Each session takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes
- Gradual emergence of result — Final volume develops over 3 to 6 months
- Duration: Up to 2 years from completion of treatment series
- Massage protocol post-treatment — Patients are typically instructed to massage the treated areas for several days after each session to promote even distribution
- Mild swelling and bruising — Typical at injection sites; resolves quickly
